Spanish embassy advises Real Madrid fans to exercise caution in Cyprus following unruly scenes in Nicosia derby

The Spanish Embassy in Cyprus has advised discretion from Real Madrid fans in order to avoid confrontations with APOEL supporters.

The pair face off at the GSP Stadium in Cyprus for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie tonight.

The announcement comes following last Friday's Nicosia derby between APOEL and Omonia, which was suspended during play on two different occasions.

The first stoppage was due to a fire being set in the stands, while the second interruption occurred when the opposing coach was pelted with numerous bottles from the stands.

After the game a car with two Omonia fans was set ablaze by APOEL supporters, almost causing a fatality, but rival fans helped the couple to safety.

Some of the more radical APOEL fans have declared through the Spanish media that they will do everything in their power, from the stands, to provide a level playing field for their side.

The Spanish Embassy hope by making fans aware of the potential for violence, they can avoid a repeat Friday's actions.
