Beckenbauer concerned by Schweinsteiger injury

Franz Beckenbauer has expressed his fear that Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger might not be fit in time for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.

The Germany international has been beset by an ankle injury and has made only two substitute appearances for the Bavarians since February 8.

"I do not know what the issue is with Schweinsteiger," Beckenbauer said in an interview with Sky.

"There are players who return immediately after an injury and then break down.

"Only Schweinsteiger knows how badly he has been injured, so I do not know what the problem is."

While Bayern's honorary president expressed hope that Schweinsteiger will be fit in time for Euro 2012, he urged Germany coach Joachim Low to only select the midfielder if he returns to full fitness.

"If Schweinsteiger is one [whose recovery] takes time, it will be tight for the European Championship," he warned.

"I do not believe that it is sufficient if he is only there."

Schweinsteiger is doubtful to feature for Bayern in Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final clash with Marseille at the Stade Velodrome, even though he has been included in the squad travelling to France.
