Agger: Skrtel is my player of the season for Liverpool

Daniel Agger believes that his centre-back partner Martin Skrtel has been Liverpool’s best player this season.

The Slovakian was ever-present during the last Premier League campaign and has ousted Reds stalwart Jamie Carragher to claim a regular place at the heart of defence this season.

The 27-year-old has put in several eye-catching displays for Kenny Dalglish's side and scored a vital goal in the League Cup final victory against Cardiff City.

Shortly after lifting Liverpool's first silverware since 2006, the former Zenit St Petersburg man was also named as Slovakia's player of the year.

Whilst injury problems have blighted his own season, Agger believes that Skrtel has been outstanding for Kenny Dalglish’s side.

"Martin, without a doubt. I don't think there is any other choice,” the Denmark international told the club’s matchday programme when asked who’d get his player of the season.

"He has been so consistent. I'm not sure how many years he has been here but he's improved every season.

"This year he has become better and better. I think in most games he has been our man of the match."

Skrtel has featured in all but two of the Merseyside outfit's 30 top-flight games this season and his consistency, along with that of his Danish counterpart, has helped build one of the best defensive records in the league. Liverpool's 31 goals conceded is a statistic bettered only by the top two, Manchester United and Manchester City.
