Notts County’s head of youth confirms Manchester United interest in Fabian Spiess

Manchester United are keen to sign Notts County youngster Fabian Spiess, according to the club’s head of youth, Mick Leonard.

The German goalkeeper has yet to make an appearance for the Magpies’ senior side, but his displays at youth level have attracted the interest of the Premier League champions as well as Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Leonard, who brought the player to Nottingham after first seeing him play in a centre of
excellence in Dubai, has now revealed that he has spoken to the Red Devils’ goalkeeping coach Eric Steele after several scouting trips were made to watch him in action.

He told the Nottingham Post: "Man United have been looking at him for a long time.

“There were also scouts from Man City and Tottenham at our youth game against Doncaster last week and Arsenal watched him when he was out on loan at Lewes. He's as good as any young goalkeeper I have seen and I wouldn't be surprised if any of the big clubs did want him.

“He can go all the way if he keeps working as hard as he is now. He has got so much potential."

United already have two young goalkeepers on their first-team books, with David De Gea and Ben Amos currently first and second choice, respectively.

With reports suggesting that Anders Lindegaard could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Ferguson could well be keen to add another keeper to bolster his ranks, particularly with the club likely to have to pay only a nominal fee for the youngster.
