Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that his team is built on youth, unlike mega-rich rivals Manchester City.
United let a two-goal lead slip to draw with Everton on Sunday just a week after suffering a shock defeat to Wigan, meaning that their cushion at the top has shrunk from eight points to just three.
The Red Devils now face City on Monday in a match which will go a long way in deciding the destination of the Premier League title - but, whilst the game is being billed as a battle of passion and riches, Ferguson insists he sees the rivalry differently.
“That’s not really accurate,” he told RMC Sport. “I don’t agree with that.
“It’s true that City became rich in an incredible way, but it is not the fact that there is a new owner and new ambitions which necessarily change things.
“The difference is perhaps that we’re trying to build with youth.”
Ferguson’s claims are somewhat backed up, with Danny Welbeck and to a lesser extent, Tom Cleverley, playing roles in the United first team this season.
They also brought in Under-21 stars Phil Jones and David de Gea last summer, although both arrived for considerable transfer fees.
Should United win on Monday, they will only need a point from their two remaining games to retain their Premier League title.
A draw would also suit the champions but a City win would place them as the favourites.
